All Blackhawk Valley horses are trained to pony as late yearlings; and as two-year olds, they're taken first to the local training track for some trotting conditioning, and later, out for the best conditioning possible - long, slow miles in the Mt. Diablo foothills of the San Francisco Bay area. By the age of three years, they're mentally and physically ready for a rider to climb aboard and get going.
To satisfy their own performance requirement for the halter horses, Cory has used endurance competition as a formidable proving ground. In addition to twenty-three Tevis finishes over the years by Blackhawk Valley horses (15 of those with Cory Soltau in the saddle), Blackhawk Valley is proud of earning two IAHA National Champion Endurance titles, Gwalyf in 1988 and Master Charge in 1989, and an IAHA National Top Ten with halter champion Bey Sonya in 1992.
